2. Post Graduate Certificate in Trauma and Grief Resilience - 14002S

General Description

Grief and trauma are public health issues. This course addresses the need for specialists in the treatment of trauma and grief. This is in response to the recent dramatic increase in tragedies and traumatic events that have had a negative impact on people's health (loss of livelihood, flood-related destruction, COVID-19 death, and abuse and displacement). Suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, and mental health issues may result from the nature of the trauma and other factors that may obstruct the healing process. Guyanese have limited access to high-quality mental health care, and professionals frequently lack the skills necessary to recognize and address the wide range of needs they have.

This course enhances foundational knowledge on grief and trauma, lived experiences of mental health, and core counselling skills in grief and trauma informed care, to empower practitioners to be effective mental health professionals. These include grief and trauma literacy, psychological intervention, creative interventions, and awareness of the impact trauma from exposure to violence, etc., has on health, behaviour, and relationships. This course is not to equip students to treat mental disorders but rather to enter the therapeutic space with a trauma informed lens to help develop appropriate interventions to promote healing, recovery, and resilience, by identifying distinct grief and trauma symptoms apart from depression and other mental disorders in clients.
