Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr George Norton on Tuesday met with the Vice Chancellor and other officials of the University of Guyana (UG) to discuss the advancement of the Sports Programme at the tertiary institution.

The first publication of the recently established The University of Guyana Press (UGP), Dynamics of Caribbean Diaspora Engagement: People, Policy, Practice, will be launched on Thursday, December 13, at 17:30 h in the Education Lecture Theatre of the University’s Turkeyen Campus. The 452-page book was edited by Professor George K. Danns, Professor of Sociology at the University of North Georgia, USA; Professor Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The University of Guyana; and Dr Fitzgerald Yaw, Director of Strategic Initiatives at UG.

University of Guyana [UG] Trojans and Pacesetters secured wins in the U23 Division, when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association [GABA] ‘League Championship’, continued on Sunday at the Burnham Court, Middle and Carmichael streets.

The Turkeyen-based institution schooled Plaisance Guardians 79-62. Jonathan Browne top scored with 18 points. He was closely followed by Kadeem Peterkin on 17 points.

 The trio of Jabari Joseph, Cubator Stephen and Denzil Ross chipped in with eight, eight and seven points respectively.

The Ministry of Education and the University of Guyana today commissioned a Facilities Maintenance Division building at the University’s Turkeyen campus.

The facility will house some 100 permanent and part-time staff responsible for eight broad areas of maintenance: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, estates, grounds, transport, custodial and building.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, emphasised the importance of proper maintenance of the nation’s premier tertiary institution.

The decision of the University of Guyana Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) to approve salary increases at the rate of 3% for all eligible UA staff and 4% for all eligible UB staff, retroactive to January 1, 2018 at its meeting on November 14, 2018 was unanimous. It must be pointed out that the President of the University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU) participated in that F&GPC meeting.

IN response to the need for high-quality education and professional development training in the extractive sector, particularly oil and gas, the University of Guyana (UG) has joined with local technical institutes to form a Higher Education Consortium on Engineering and Mining (HECEM).

TWENTY-one-year-old Rovindra Lakenarine, who lives in Golden Fleece Village, Pomeroon-Supenaam ( Region Two) has graduated as the Second Best Graduating Student for the Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Guyana. Lakenarine was given the award at the 52nd Convocation Ceremony held on November 9.

The University of Guyana for the first time conferred four honorary doctorates to distinguished Guyanese during its 52nd convocation ceremony held at the National Cultural Centre, Georgetown.

The Chancellor, Professor Eon Harris, conferred Doctor of Letters to Eddy Grant for excellence in music and civic engagement, Yesu Persaud received iconic leadership in business and banking, Jairaj Sobhraj for excellence in entrepreneurship and philanthropy and Laura George for outstanding community development and advocacy.
