Certificate In Refraction Techniques
Earn a Refraction Technician Certificate in one year while you prepare for admission to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Optometry.
WHERE?
The University of Guyana, School of Professional Development, Turkeyen campus, invites suitably qualified persons to enroll in the one-year Certificate in Refraction Techniques programme. This programme is offered in collaboration with the Caribbean Council for the Blind.
The objectives are to:
- train refraction technicians in basic knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the eye
- produce skilled refraction technicians able to refract patients, prescribe basic spectacles and dispense simple magnifiers
- equip refraction technicians with basic skills to screen for (external and internal) eye disorders and to refer to eye care professionals
- train refraction technicians to raise public awareness of general eye care and health issues related to the eyes
- Give refraction technicians a strong orientation toward the importance of inclusive Education and Adjustment to Blindness training, for children and adults with (severe) none reversible visual impairments.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
- A minimum age of 18 years and:
- Completion of five years secondary education with a minimum pass of grade three (3) in the following CXC General Proficiency subjects: English A, Mathematics, and Integrated Science. (Persons who do not have the required CXC English and/or Mathematics, but possess the one year I.D.C.E level certificates in those subjects will be considered for admission).
OR
- Other qualification deemed equivalent by the University of Guyana, Faculty of Health Sciences. OR
- The applicant must be 26 years or older in the calendar year in which entry into the programme is sought, and must have a minimum of two years experience in a related field.
NOTE:
- Registration takes place in September each year.
- The Ministry of Finance Student Loan Agency does not offer a student loan for this programme.
- Students seeking to pursue this programme would have to acquire sponsorship or finance themselves.
