SUMMER PLACEMENTS

Students will be encouraged[1] to spend their summer vacations gaining supervised work experience in the forest sector. While many students may be able to achieve this individually, it is more beneficial if the process is co-ordinated and monitored by the Forestry Unit.

A range of organisations – including forest concession-holders, Guyana Forestry Commission and Non- Governmental Organisation – have been willing in the past to take on students with positive results. A simple database of these is being developed to assist students finding placements. The placements will be structured to allow the maximum experience to be gained by the student while at the same time being beneficial to the organisation.

A short report on the placement will be requested by the Forestry Unit from both the organisation and the student on completion of the placement. It is also beneficial for some monitoring of the student, which may include a site visit where feasible, during the placement. The Forestry Unit will also prepare a brief pro-forma for agreement among the parties identifying the objectives of the placement, responsibilities and liabilities.
