Dr. Patsy Francis is the Immediate Past Dean of the , Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. She joined the Faculty in January 1987.
She has a Ph.D (1999) in Animal Nutrition, 
Nutritional Microbiology & Food Technology from the    
University of Tennessee
Her M.Sc. (1990) in Animal Nutrition was also obtained   
from the University of Tennessee.
 
Her B.Sc. in  Agriculture was   
obtained in 1986 from the   
University of Guyana
 
Her area of specialisation is in  Animal Nutrition
 
Her is actively engaged indeveloping agricultural business
among persons trained in agriculture.
 
She is a member of the Poultry Science
Association 
She is currently  researching heat stress in poultry using coir
boards and cardboards

Dr. Theodosius M. Velloza is serving as Dean from August 1, 2006 to July 31, 2008. He has served for two terms as Assistant Dean in the Faculty. He previously held the position  from September 2001 to August 2004 and from September 2005 to July 2006.

He has a Ph.D. (1997) in Seed Physiology from the Oregon State University and an MSc. (1991) in Seed Technology from Mississippi State University.

He currently lectures in Seed Technology, Field Crops, Tropical Vegetables Production and Statistical Methods and Experimental Designs.

As Assistant Dean he is the Faculty's principal Liaison with the Registry on all student matters.

His research interests include seed storage and deterioration of vegetable and legume seeds. He is currently researching a series of best husbandry practices for poi (Basella alba).

He has also undergone training in the area of molecular techniques, especially the AFLP methods, and how these can be applied to enhance seed conservation.

He is a member the International Society for Seed Science and the current Treasurer of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences (Guyana Chapter).

 

Owen Bovell joined the Faculty in 2001 and is now Assistant Dean of the Faculty. He previously held the position of Head, Department of Forestry. He has an MSc. in Natural Resource Management from the  University of the West Indies (Thesis title – “Case Study: The Efficiency of Reduced Impact Logging and Conventional Logging in the Tropical Rainforest of Guyana.”), and a BSc in  Forestry from the University of Guyana. His current interest is in Mangrove Forests, Forest Management, Reduced Impact Logging, Forest Ecology, Terrestrial Biodiversity, Silviculture, and Coastal and Marine Biodiversity

His specialisation is in Forest Management, Coastal Zone Management, Mangrove Management, Environmental Management, Natural Resource Management, Monitoring of Coastal and Marine Biodiversity.

He is a member of the Forestry Training Centre Incorporated Advisory Board, Secretary of the University of Guyana Forestry Advisory Board, Team Leader of Module 5 Mangrove Management Committee and a member of the Environmental Chamber of the Guyana National Initiative on Forest Certification (GNIFC).

 

 

Mr. Arnold DeMendonca is the Head, Department of Agriculture. He joined the Faculty in September, 2003. He is the Faculty's "live wire" and de facto photographer.

He lectures Agribusiness Management & Marketing, Forest Resource Economics and Agricultural Extension.

He is actively involved in the 4H club of Guyana.

His research interests include the Supply-Response of Farmers to the Price of various Agricultural Commodities.

 

 

 


Dr. Subramanian Gomathinayagam is a molecular plant pathologist who joined our Faculty in 2004. He is an Indian national who is also located at the Berbice Campus, Johns where he teaches plant pathology.

He has received award from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Council of Science and Industrial Research for Senior Research Fellow.

He is a  life member of the International Society of Conservation of Natural Resources, a member of the American Society of Microbiologist and a member of the Indian Phytopathological Society.

He has written 2 chapters in books and has 4 refereed journal publications. He has also filed for 3 patents in the preparation of chemically modified fibrin sheet, powder and sponge prepared from slaughterhouse waste.3

Dillon Husbands is our Manager, Research Centre. She joined the staff in 2004 after obtaining her BSc. in Agriculture.

Her current interest is in the area of Mushroom cultivation where she is producing the paddy straw (Volvariella sp), button and the oyster (Ostreatus sp) mushrooms. She is also researching the usefulness of using several local materials as growth media for these mushrooms. In addition she is proposing to identify and categorise the mushrooms in our native tropical rainforests.

 

 

Errol Luke is a specialist in animal husbandry. Formerly employed with the Ministry of Crops and Livestock, he joined the staff in September 2004.

A new member to academia, he says that teaching at the tertiary level is a very challenging but fulfilling experience. He lectures in production and husbandry of beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep & goat, buffalo, swine and aquaculture.

He is a retired Chief Crops and Livestock Officer in the Ministry of Fisheries, Crops and Livestock whose duties included  ensuring the provision of services to the crops and Livestock sub sector, and providing technical and professional direction, guidance and training to the staff of the Crops and Livestock Department. In addition he was the chief advisor to the Minister and Permanent Secretary on all aspects of agricultural production and regulatory matters in agricultural trade.

 

                                                        Susy Lewis is our most recent addition  to the Facuclty. A Nicaraguan by birth, she possesses an MSc. Forest Engineering, and specialises in Silviculture.


She currently lectures Dendrology, Forest Ecology, Silviculture, Information Technology in Forestry, GIS (Geographic Information System) in Forestry and Wildlife Management. 

Her current Interest and research is Forest Ecology or Agro-Forestry

She is the co-author of a Booklet on Techniques for the harvesting and Processing of Brazil Nuts. Georgetown, October 2002. GTZ/GFA Terra Systems GmbH. 

 

 

 

Lawrence Hillary Lewis has an M.Sc. in Forest Engineering. He has been with the University of Guyana for 2 years. He is the serving Head, Department of Forestry.

Current Responsibilities:     He lectures in Forestry Engineering, Forest Mensuration and Inventory, Human Resources and Financial Management, Introduction to Forestry and Mathematics for Forestry

His current interest is in both Solar and Air drying methods, Biodiversity inventory, Auto-ecology and Ecological studies of Guyana timber species and Saw milling technology.

He is a serving member of the Guyana National Initiative for Forest Certification. ISTF (International Society for Tropical Foresters).

 

 

 

Mr. Elroy Charles is currently on earned study leave and extension of leave under staff development in the U.K. where he is reading for his Ph.D. in entomology. He joined the staff in 1999 and has served as Assistant Dean for one year.

He has an active interest in Forest Ecology and Forest Entomology.

He lectures in Agricultural Entomology, Zoology and Forest Protection.

His recent publications include:

Ms. Donna Morrison, who is currently on Sabbatical Leave, joined the Faculty in February 1988 as an Assistant Lecturer. She is a plant physiologist by training.

She has served as both Assistant Dean and Dean of the Faculty.

She has been a visiting scholar to the Kearney Agricultural Center, University of California, Davis.

She lectures in Biochemistry, Plant Physiology and, Pomology, Orchard management and Fruit Preservation.

Her research interest is in organoleptic evaluation and testing of various dishes prepared from locally available fruits.

Donna Singh is a relatively new member of our academic community. She is an Assistant Lecturer who joined the staff in August 2006. One of our bright "new sparks", she is keen on maintaining the high standard of practical training forestry students undergo. She is currently enrolled in the Post-graduate Diploma in Education in an effort to enhance her teaching skills. She hope to pursue post graduate training in Tourism and Community Development

 

 

Candice DeFreitas has been our Administrative Officer from October 2007. She possesses a degree in Communication from the University of Guyana.

Her duties include:
Maintenance of accurate academic records of each student
Supervision of non-academic staff
Processing all incoming and outgoing mail
Maintenance of the Faculty filing system
Coordinating meetings and seminar for Faculty members
Creating and updating financial statements
Ordering office stationery and supplies
Circulating pre-meeting packages

The entire Faculty wishes her a long and productive stay at the University.

 

 

Bernadette Ageday is the Personal Assistant to the Dean just under two years, though she has been with the University over 18 years. She is an individual who has been extremely keen on learning as much about computer programmes as possible.
She enjoys working with the students and find them to be very friendly, respectful, cooperative and kind.

 

 

 

Shermaine Critchlow joined the staff in 2006 as a Laboratory Technician II. She is very keen on learning and improving her techniques in the laboratory. She is a helpful individual who finds working with students to be interesting.

 

 

 

 

Seema Persaud joined our staff this year (2007). She is our clerk-typist II who provides critical support to the Administrative Officer and plays a leading role in our filing system and maintenance of students record.

 

 

 

 

Steve Rekheram is our Office Assistant who joined the Faculty this year (2007).  Steve provides the intra-university mail delivery services. He is a vital member of our Faculty who does the bulk of our photocopying for both students and staff.
