Event Description

Symposium on Boys’ Education

The Faculty of Education and Humanities at the University of Guyana will be hosting a symposium on boys’education under the theme: “Bridging the Gender Divide – Stemming the Tide of Male Underachievement in the Education System” on the 28-29 June 2018, at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre. This Symposium will be a joint effort between the University, the Ministry of Education, the Commonwealth of Learning, CARICOM, UNICEF and other key stakeholders.

This event aims to attract a wide cross-section of local, regional and international researchers and decision-makers in an effort to better understand the prevailing issues in relation to boys’ education. Presentations and discussions will cover existing research, best practices, and approaches implemented in various education systems, with a view towards devising strategies to effectively address the issues. As such, the range of related sub-topics to be covered will include but not be limited to:

1) Boys’ Under-representation and Underperformance 
2) Feminisation of Education – the Absent Male Teacher
3) Socialisation of Males – Keeping Boys Out of Risk
4) School Factors and Pedagogical Choices, Gender Disparities
5) Empowerment of Boys
