Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry

• Diploma in:
  • Forestry
  Candidates possessing ANY ONE of the following requirements may be admitted to the Diploma Programme:
  1. At least five (5) subjects at the CXC/CSEC General Proficiency examination, Grades I, II (or III from 1998) and/or at the GCE "O" Level Examination (Grades A, B or C) or equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. Four subjects at the CXC/CSEC General Proficiency examination (Grades I, II or III) and/or GCE "O" Level examination (Grades I, II or III) or equivalent, together with the Ordinary Diploma in Science (Credit Grade) from the Government Technical Institute.
  3. Diploma/ Certificate in Agriculture or Forestry from the Guyana School of Agriculture with at least a pass with credit.
  
  
• Bachelor's Degree in:
  • Forestry
  Candidates possessing ANY ONE of the following requirements may be admitted to the Degree Programme:
  1. The basic University requirements which must include passes in any two of the following subjects: Additional Mathematics, Agriculture Science (Double Award), Biology, Chemistry, Integrated Science (Double Award) and Physics, with grade I or II (or III from 1998).
  2. The Diploma in Agriculture from the Guyana School of Agriculture or its equivalent.
  3. The Diploma in Forestry from the University of Guyana or its equivalent.
  4. The Diploma in Animal Health/Livestock production from REPAHA
  5. Persons of mature age (a minimum of 26 years in the calendar year of entry to the University) who do not meet the minimum requirements but who can satisfy the University with evidence of recent academic achievement and relevant experience and a pass at the University of Guyana Entrance Examination (UGEE).
  • Agriculture (Majors - General Agriculture, Animal Science, Crop Science, Soil Sciences)
  Candidates possessing ANY ONE of the following requirements may be admitted to the Degree Programme:
  1. Applicants must possess at least five (5) subjects at the CXC/GCE examinations including English Language and Mathematics and passes in any of the following: Additional Mathematics, Agriculture Science (Double Award), Biology, Chemistry, Integrated Science (Double Award) and physics, Grades I, or II, (or III from 1998).
  2. Diploma in Agriculture from the Guyana School of Agriculture or its equivalent.
  3. The Diploma in Forestry from the University of Guyana or its equivalent.
  4. The Diploma in Animal health from REPHA or its equivalent.
  5. Persons of mature age (a minimum of 26 years in the calendar year of entry to the University ) who do not meet the minimum requirements but who satisfy the University with evidence of recent academic achievement and relevant experience and a pass at the University of Guyana Entrance Examination (UGEE).
  Note: Students may opt to do:

School of Education & Humanities

• Certificate / Diploma / Associate Degree:
  • Undergraduate Certificate (Certificate of Competence in French, Spanish)
  1. Two-Year Certificate of Competence: (French, Spanish) The programme is designed for professionals who may need some competence in reading, understanding and speaking in one of the foreign languages stated above. It focuses on specialized/technical context along with the grammar of the language.
  
  
  • Undergraduate Diplomas (Music, Tourism)
  1. Music: For the Diploma in Music, applicants must successfully complete the two-year Certificate in Music. The Diploma Programme is of one-year duration
  2. Diploma in Tourism Studies: For this programme, candidates must possess a minimum of five (5) subjects at CXC General Proficiency (Grade I, II or III)/GCE ‘O’ Level (Grades A, B or C) including English Language or hold a Trained Teachers' Certificate
  • Certificate in Education
  Specialisation is offered in:
  • Administration, Early Childhood Education, Administration Primary, Administration Secondary, Primary General, Agriculture, Business Studies, English, Home Economics, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, Technical Education, Literacy Studies, English Literature and Linguistics, Geography and Economics, History and Literature, Linguistics, Fine Arts, Tourism Studies, French and Spanish. Minors in other subjects done within the Faculty are allowed, for example, French, Fine Arts, Music, Creative Writing, Drama, in addition to the other Arts subjects named above. Minors in other Faculties are also permitted. For some Minors in the Faculty of Social Sciences a pass in Mathematics is required.
    
    Applicants must note that:
    
    The Department of Language and Cultural Studies and the Department of Social Studies offers Double Majors. Students who wish to pursue Double Majors must have obtained the entry requirement for at least one of the subjects in the desired Double Majors and must also obtain the permission of the relevant Faculty/Department for the subject.
  
  
• Degree:
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)

  For the Bachelor of Arts Degree

  Applicants must possess the normal University entry requirements:
  Specilisation is offered in: Art, English, Spanish, Tourism Studies, English Literature and Linguistics, History, Fine Arts, Tourism Studies, French and Spanish. Minors in other subjects done within the School as well as other Faculties are also permitted

  1. Applicants with at least two (2) appropriate GCE. "A" level passes would qualify for certain exemptions, thus allowing them to complete the degree within a shorter period.
  2. Applicants must obtain a pass in English Language and the subject in which they wish to specialise.
  3. Preference will be given to applicants to the Divison of English who possess a pass in English (B) in addition to English (A) in the CXC/CSEC.
  4. The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Arts may be done either over a four-year or a two-year period.
  5. For the four-year Degree, the normal University entry requirements would apply but must include Art. If Art is not included, applicants must:
     1. Successfully present a portfolio of recent work and
     2. Successfully complete a Drawing Exam set by the Division of Creative Arts. OR
     3. Possess a Trained Teachers' Certificate plus (a) and (b) above.
  • Bachelor & Certificate Programmes in Education (CERT. ED.)

  Applicants must possess the normal University entry requirements:
  Specilisation is offered in: Administrative, Early Childhood Education, Administration Primary, Administration Secondary, Primary General, Agriculture, Business Studies, English, Home Economics, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, Technical Education, Literacy Studies, English Literature and Linguistics, History, Fine Arts, Tourism Studies, French and Spanish. Minors in other subjects done within the School as well as other Faculties are also permitted

  1. Acceptable grades in the relevant option(s)/area(s) at CXC/CSEC General Proficiency/GCE examinations. AND
  2. A Trained Teacher's Certificate with specialisation in the relevant subject area.
  3. Other equivalent qualifications
  4. Specilisation is offered in Nursery Education, Primary Education, Administrative and Teaching, Agriculture, Business Education, English, Geography, History, Home Economics, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Science, Social Studies, Teaching and Reading and Technical Education.
  5. The option in Administration and Teaching is intended for applicants who hold administrative positions in Nursery, Primary, or Secondary Schools, or other Educational Training Institutions
  6. Such applicants would normally be Head-Teachers, Deputy Head-Teachers, Senior Masters/Mistresses, Heads of Department, Training Officers, Education Officers, and Education Supervisors.

  Note:
  

  • All applicants must be actively involved in the practice of Education at the commencement of the Programme.
  • Classes are normally held in the afternoon from Monday to Friday, and all day on Saturday.
  • Persons operating at the Nursery, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary levels, and who are actively engaged in the practice of Education may apply.

  For the Bachelor of Education (B.E.D)

  Specialisation is offered in:

  Administration and Teaching, English, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Science and Social Studies.

  For the Postgraduate Diploma applicants should obtain at least a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualifications with specialisation in the appropriate area.

  NOTE: This programme is of two (2) years' duration. Classes are held all day on SATURDAYS.

  • Master of Arts (History)
  Master of Arts (History) applicants should obtain either:

  1. Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Sciences Degree from the University of Guyana with at least a "B" average or equivalent AND must complete University of Guyana courses HST323, 411 & 421 (Guyanese History (courses) and HST 221 (West Indies History) or equivalent. In special circumstances these courses may be taken concurrently with HST611, HST612, HST621 and HST622 during year 1 of the programme.

  OR

  2. Other qualifications and experience approved by the Board for Post-Graduate Studies.

  
  

  N.B: Applicants who are not graduates of the University of Guyana must ensure that an official transcript of their undergraduate work is submitted to the Registrar, University of Guyana.

Faculty of Health Sciences

• Associate of Science Degree in:
  • Optometry
  • Environmental Health
  For the Associate of Sciences Degree in Environmental Health:
  1. Passes in five (5) at CXC/CSEC General Proficiency examination, Grades I, II, III or GCE “O” level Grades A,B or C (Or equivalent) at one (1) sitting or six (6) subjects at two (2) sittings. Subjects must include English Language, Biology or Human Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

  OR

  2. Passes in four (4) subjects at the CXC/CSEC General Proficiency Examination, Grades I, II, or III /GCE "O" Level, Grades A, B, or C subject which must include English Language, Mathematics, and Biology together with the two-year Ordinary Diploma in Science , Pass with Credit, from the GTI/NATI.
  3. Environmental Health Assistant Certificate, and two years’ post-qualification experience.
  4. Mature students (26 years and over) who do not satisfy the above requirements are eligible for admission, provided they have had a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a related professional field and are successful at the University’s Entrance Examination. (UGEE)
  
  


• Bachelor's Degree in:
  • Pharmacy
  Applicants to the Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy must obtain one of the following:
  1. A Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree – Biology/Chemistry minor or Chemistry major/Biology minor from the University of Guyana or any other approved institution of higher learning
  2. A Diploma or Associated Degree in Science from the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Guyana or any other approved institution of higher learning.
  3. A minimum of two subjects at GCE ‘A’ level or CAPE Examination which must include Chemistry and Biology. GCE ‘A’ level grades A, B, and C (or equivalent) are accepted as pass.
  4. A minimum of (5) five subjects at the GCE ‘O’ level, grades A, B, or C or CXC/CSEC (General proficiency), grades I, II, or II four (4) of which must be Chemistry, Biology (or Human Biology), Mathematics and English. Integrated Science (DA) may replace Chemistry or Biology
  5. The Ordinary Diploma in Science (ODS) from the Government Technical Institute (Credit Grade) in addition to a minimum of four subjects at the CXC/CSEC (General Proficiency, Grades I, II, and III or GCE ‘O’ level Grades A, B, or C l which must include English, Mathematics, Biology (or Human Biology) and Chemistry. Integrated Science (DA) may replace Chemistry or Biology.
  6. Veterinary Assistant Diploma from REPAHA (Credit Grade) or a Diploma in Agriculture (Credit Grade) in addition to a minimum of two years continuous relevant work experience after qualifications.
  7. Persons who have successfully completed the Pharmacy Assistant Training Programme run by the Ministry of Health in addition to two (2) years continuous relevant work experience after qualifications, and are successful at the University’s Entrance Examination (UGEE).
  8. Mature applicants (26 years and over) are eligible, provided they have had a minimum of five (5) years continuous relevant work experience in a professional field: e.g. Pharmacy or Nursing and are successful at the University’s Entrance Examination (UGEE).
  9. Any other qualification considered equivalent by the Faculty of Health Sciences.
  • Optometry
  • Rehabilitation Sciences
  • Medical Technology
  Applicants to the Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology must obtain one of the following:
  • Diploma/ Associate Degree in Medical Technology OR
  • Passes at five (5) subjects at the CXC/CSEC (General Proficiency) Examination, Grades I to III (or equivalent) at one (1) sitting or six (6) subjects at two (2) sittings which must include English Language, Mathematics and any two (2) of the following science subjects:Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Integrated Science (Single Award) and Physics. OR
  • Three (3) subjects at the CXC/CSEC (General Proficiency) Examination, Grades 1 to III (or equivalent) which must include English Language, Mathematics and one of the following science subjects: Biology, Human Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Integrated Science (Single Award) together with the two-year Ordinary Diploma (ODC) (Pass with Credit) from the GovernmentTechnical Institute. (GTI). OR
  • Three (3) subjects at the CXC/CSEC (General Proficiency) Examination, Grades I or III (or equivalent) which must include English Language, Human Biology, Mathematics and either Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Intergated Science (Single Award) together with eighteen (18) months Multi-Technician Course from GAHEF.
  • Three (3) subjects at the CXC/CSEC( General Proficiency) Examination. Grade I to III (or equivalent) which must include English Language, Mathematics and at least two of the following: Chemistry, Biology, Human Biology, Physics or Integrated Science, together with the nine (9) monthFoundation Health Care Programme from Davis Memorial Hospital. OR
  • Mature students (26 years and over ) may be considered provided they have at least three years continuous relevant experience and wouldhave been successful at the University of Guyana Entrance Examination (UGEE).
  • Any other qualification deemed equivalent by the University to any of the above.
  
  
  • Nursing

  Persons seeking admission to this programme must produce evidence that they possess:

  1. Five passes CXC grades 1 – 111, or GCE A – C including English, Mathematics and a Science subject
     OR
     1. Ordinary Diploma in Science (pass with credit) from the Government Technical Institute, plus three subjects at CXC or GCE which must include English, Mathematics and a science subject.
     2. Trained Teacher’s Certificate with specilisation in Natural Science and three (3) passes at CXC or GCE including English and Mathematics. Pass in Biology or Human Biology will be an advantage.
     3. Any other qualification equivalent to (i) or (ii) and as deemed by the Faculty of Health Sciences.
  PLUS
  2. A certificate of Registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing Council of Guyana or any other foreign registration which is acceptable to both the Nursing Council and the University of Guyana.
     *CXC grade III accepted from 1998.
  3. A certificate from the Ministry of Health showing completion of the Medex programme and also registration to practice as a Medex.
  4. Persons of mature age (26 years and over) are also eligible, provided they have had a minimum of five (5) years continuous and relevant working experience and are successful at the University of Guyana Entrance Examination (UGEE).
  5. Applicants whose first language is not English must present evidence of English language competency in the form of test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) or some other equivalent examination.

  
  
  • Medicine & Srugery (MBBS)
  1. A first degree Pass with Credit as a minimum in a Sciences-based programme such as Biology, Chemistry or Physics, Environmental Sciences or Health Sciences.

  OR

  2. Three (3) or more passes at the GCE ‘A’ level or its equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics with a “C” as the minimum grade in at least two (2) subjects.

  OR

  3. Three (3) or more passes in CAPE or its equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics with grade III as the minimum grade in at least two (2) subjects.

  OR

  4. First-year passes in a Science-based programme such as Biology or Chemistry or Physics or Environmental Studies with grade “B” as the minimum grade in at least two (2) course or an overall GPA of 3.0.

  OR

  5. Second-year passes in a Science-based programme such as Biology or Chemistry or Physics or Environmental Studies with “B” as the minimum grade in at least two (2) courses or an overall GPA of 3.0.

  OR

  6. Second-year passes of a Degree of Health Science programme such as Pharmacy or Medical Technology with an overall GPA of 3.0.

  OR

  7. A Faculty of Health Sciences Diploma/Associate of Science Degree with a Pass with Credit in Medical Technology, Environmental Health, Pharmacy or Radiography.

  OR

  8. A Bachelor of Science (BSc.) Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution with a minimum Pass with Credit.

  OR

  9. Any qualification considered by the University to be equivalent to any of the above.

  • A minimum of three (3) passes at the GCE "A" Levels or its equivalent in Physics, Biology or Mathematics with a "C" as the minimum grade in at least two (2) subjects. OR

Institute of Distance & Continuing Education

• Diploma in:
  • Occupational Health & Safety
  Applicants to the Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety must obtain one of the following:
  • The Institute of Distance and Continuing Education Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • An Environmental Health Officer's Certificate.
  • A College or University qualification in a Science, Management, Nursing or Technical subject.
  • Other qualification which the Institute deems to be equivalent and appropriate.
    

Faculty of Natural Sciences

• Diploma in:
  • Computer Science
  • Applicants must have five (5) subjects CXC at not more than two sittings which mustinclude Mathematics and English
  NOTE:
  1. Applicants who do not have Grades I or II prior to June 1998 OR Gr. I, II or III after June 1998 in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics may be considered for admission if they are successful in the foundation courses in these subjects. Only one foundation course may be used as an admission criterion.
  2. Agriculture Science, Integrated Science (Double Award and Single Award) Human and Social Biology (as a Second Science) at CXC/CSEC General Grades I, II or III will be considered.
  3. Applicants with a Grade IV in CXC/CSEC General English will be considered for admission, if they are successful at an English Qualifying (University) Examination (EQE).
  4. Applicants with a grade IV in CXC/CSEC general Mathematics will be considered for admission, if they are successful at a qualifying University examination in mathematics. (An applicant will only be allowed to take one qualifying exam)
  5. Applicants with a grade IV in CXCCSEC Chemistry (general ) will be considered for admission to the CHEMISTRY degree programme, if they are successful at a qualifying University examination in Chemistry (CQE).
  6. Holders of the Diploma in Technology, or Diploma in Pharmacy or Associated Degree in Pharmacy with a GPA of 2.7 are eligible to apply to the BIOLOGY or CHEMISTRY degree programme.
  7. Holders of the Diploma in Agriculture (Pass with a credit) from the Guyana School of Agriculture are eligible to apply to the BIOLOGY degree programmes.
  8. Holders of the Ordinary Diploma in Science (ODS) - Chemistry option, (Pass with Credit), from the Government Technical Institute are eligible to apply to the CHEMISTRY or BIOLOGY degree programme or the Computer Science Diploma programme..
  9. Holders of the Ordinary Diploma in Science - Chemistry option, Pass with Credit, in addition to three (3) passes at CXC/GCE Grades I and II, before June, 1998, or Grade III after June, 1998 /GCE ‘O’ level Grades A, B or C, which must include English and a Science subject, are also eligible to apply to the CHEMISTRY or BIOLOGY degree programmes.
  10. Holders of the Trained Teachers’ Certificate (Secondary Mathematics option) are eligible to apply to the MATHEMATICS degree programme or the COMPUTER SCIENCE diploma programme.
  11. Holders of the Trained Teachers’ Certificate (Secondary Science option), plus a minimum of three (3) passes at CXC/GCE which must include Biology and Chemistry are eligible to apply to BIOLOGY or CHEMISTRY degree programmes..
  12. Holders of the Diploma in Computer Science (GTI) are eligible to apply for the Degree in Computer Science programme.
  13. Applicants who do not possess five (5) required subjects at one sitting or six (6) required subjects at two sittings will be required to pass the University of Guyana Entrance Examination (UGEE).
  14. Mature applicants (26 years or older) who do not meet any of the previously stated criteria but who have significant experience / exposure in the field applied for, may be considered for admission. Such students will be required to pass the University of Guyana Entrance Examination (UGEE)..
  15. Students with equivalent qualifications for the above may also apply to the Faculty for consideration for admission.

  • Applicants to the B.Sc. degree programme in BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, and PHYSICS must have among the passes at CXC/CSEC General Proficiency/GCE "O" Level, the major subject area to be studied AND one other Science subject.
  • Applicants to the Degree Programme in Computer Science must possess one of the following:
    • A Diploma in Computer Science pass with a mimimum GPA of 2.5.
    • A Diploma in Computer Sciences pass with GPA 2.4 overall (if major GPA 2.6 and other 2.3).
    • Diploma in Computer Science and two years work experience after completion of the Diploma, if GPA is Poorer than 2.4.
  • Holders of the Associate Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Statistics from the University of Guyana Berbice Campus are eligible to apply for admission at the Year III level of the respective degree programmes.

  Applicants to the Degree Programme in Computer Science must possess one of the following:
  • A Diploma in Computer Science pass with a mimimum GPA of 2.5.
  • A Diploma in Computer Sciences pass with GPA 2.4 overall (if major GPA 2.6 and other 2.3).

  For the Master's in Forest Biology applicants must obtain one of following:
  1. A first degree pass in Biology or Agriculture or Economics or Forestry or Geography with a minimum GPA of 2.7.
  2. An equivalent qualification in a specialization deemed by the Faculty to be appropriate.
  Consideration will also be given to applicants who have not met (a) or (b) above, but who also have relevant research experience and have acquired a GPA of no less than 3.0 in the final two years of the first degree in any of the areas listed in (a) above.   4. A Trained Teacher Certificate together with CXC/GCE passes in Biology and Chemistry or Integrated Science at the appropriate grades.
  5. A Diploma in Forestry.
  6. Mature applicants (26 years and over) who do not possess these qualifications may be considered for admission provided they have a good general education, creditable work experience in the field and must have passed the University of Guyana Entrance Examination (UGEE).

  Agriculture Science (Double Award) and Integrated Science will also be considered for admission to the programme.

  2. Geography courses may be offered as part of a minor or as an elective by student reading for degrees in other programmes offered by the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and in other Faculties.
  3. Candidates with the requisite GCE ‘A’ Level or CAPE (grades I – II) qualification may be granted exemption from some year-one courses in the Degree Programme to enable them to complete the programme in three years.

• Passes in at least five different subjects at the CXC/CSEC General Proficiency/GCE"O" Level or equivalent examination which must include:
  1. Passes in at least five different subjects at the CXC/CSEC General Proficiency, Grades I & II (and Grade III from 1998) or GCE"O" Level grade A – c at no more than two (2) sittings. Subjects must include:
     English Language, Mathematics (pure or additional), Integrated Science, Chemistry or Physics or Engineering Science. NOTE:

     Applicants with the required number at subjects who do not possess English language may be asked to take a qualifying examination in English set by the University.

     1. Applicants with Integrated Science Double Award grades I and II, before June 1998/Grade III after June 1998 will be considered as two Science subjects.
     2. Applicants who do not have the required Science/Maths subjects but who have five (5) GCE/CXC/CSEC subjects at the acceptable grade may apply for admission to the University.
        Such applicants will normally be required to complete successfully Chemistry, Mathematics, and/or Physics at the University during the period July - August prior to admission. Each applicant will be considered on his/her own merit by the Faculty Admissions Committee.
     3. For the Diploma in Technology (Architecture), a science subject as stated in (iii) above is not a requirement but is desirable.
     4. Applicants with qualifications in Building Technology, Metals, Electricity, Electronics and Information Technology and Woods in lieu of the relevant science subjects will be considered. Such applicants will, however, be required to successfully complete Chemistry and /or Physics at the University of Guyana during July - August prior to admission.
  2. The Guyana Technical Education Examination (G.T.E.E.) Technicians Certificate Part I and II, or equivalent in any of the following, is also considered:
